just after a flash for my D40x just wondering if i should go straight for the SB900 or got for a older one ?

What do you want to use it for? A sb-600 will be fine for anything other than commanding other flashes via CLS, and it's a fraction of the price of a sb-800/900

mostly just people and stuff , just want to do a few things with flash

I wouldn't bother with the sb-900.. it's very much a pro unit (used to command other wireless flashes etc) so for the d40x, I'd stick with a sb-600 to be honest. I've got two of them, and I love them.
