Hi everyone,

Im just in the process of buying my first DLSR - very excited!

I mainly take photos of children and close ups - I love blurring the background out and just focussing on the person etc.

The ones I have looked at are:
Nikon D60 (Although most out of stock now as been replaced by 3000)
Nikon D3000
Canon 1000D
Canon 450D (although slightly out of the budget I would stretch to it if it was going to be heaps better for what I want)

I was going to buy the twin lens kit which is 18-55 and 55-200.
Im also going to do a photography course once I have the camera.

Soooooo which one do you guys think I should get going off what I have said?

Thank you SO much! :)

to get the blur will be dependent on the lens you get.
the lower the F/stop the shallower depth of field you will achieve.
things like a 50mm f1.8 or f 1.4 will do this nicely and cheaply for portraits, no zoom though.
twin lens kits are good for general use, but can also achieve the blur.

im not sure about camera bodies though.

hope this helps a little.

If you are looking at a Canon camera, and on a budget, id look at a 20d ( $500-600) a 50f1.8 ( $150) and a 100-300f5.6 ( $260)

All on trademe at the moment.

The kit lenses you get with most camera wont do what you want.

If you are looking at a Canon camera, and on a budget, id look at a 20d ( $500-600) a 50f1.8 ( $150) and a 100-300f5.6 ( $260)

Thanks, the twin lens kit that you get with them - what would you use those lens for?

I want to keep it under $2000k if possible.

The ones you said 50f1.8 ( $150) and a 100-300f5.6 ( $260) - what would I use them for?

Thank you!

The 50mm f1.8 is a nice lens for portraits, and the 100-300 does a reasonable job for close up (macro) photography , you could go for a 50mm f2.5 marco to cover both jobs.

A hint for Canon cameras,
the 1000d, 450d, 400d,500d,300d the focus is ok
the 10d,20d,30d,40d,50d, 5d,5dmk2 the focus is good
the 7d the focus is better still
the 1 series cameras the focus is very good

so for static photos all camera do a go job, for fast kids/movement the 1 series is the best

There's a lot to be said for Canon's newer kit lenses. Both the 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS are great for the money. Add a 50 1.8 and you've got many photographic situations covered.

Any Canon body will do right back to the 350D and 20D.

Not a Nikon user but the D3000 looks like a decent camera - I'd take it in preference to the 1000D

This has been covered before many many times, just do a simple search.

BTW - if you buy from TM get off Bartman... really reliable. ( yes he's my friend.)
