I have many photos of flowers close up and many many landscape photos but this is my first one that includes a small bee. I actually did not think that my camera would be able to do this so was pleasantly surprised.

nice advise will try to bear that in mind,
is that new pic shot with another camera? the pic quality looks starkly diffrent...
like a pns vs dslr... I love the colour harmony!
Try hosting photos on flickr...they appear much higher res and sharper when posting...photobucket, not so much...

Hi, both photos were taken on the same camera, however the second photo I was able to stand much closer. As for using flickr, I seem to be having severe blond moments in learning how to convert the link. I have read the instructions in the post above but alas the picture will not show up here.

This is the best I can do until I learn the correct technique.

Here it is, although it's only 73kb so not high res as such.
Just upload to flickr, go to your photostream, click on the image and when it displays, click all sizes, then click on the size you want (medium probably displays best), click medium and when it appears, there is a url link under it, copy it, then on here click the photo icon on your post and paste the link there and its done...

No one's mentioned, so I'm going to have to be the bad guy here....
The bee's out of focus, badly. It really spoils it. First pic the whole thing looks to be motion blurred - take care to not move or get a tripod (especially true if you plan on doing macro shots more than just occasionally)
Keep at it though, just thought I'd give you more to aspire to ;)

yeah macro photography can be a bit of a hit and miss when the DOF is thin and the wind is blowing, and the bee is fleeting the scene...
I'd say the 2nd pic was pretty good.
I wonder what lens camera and settings was used. that can be quite helpful for technical reasons.
2nd pic the DOF looks alot deeper then the first...

Good compared to the first maybe, but at no stage will a macro of a bee with the bee completely out of focus be a (technically) good photo.
I'm not trying to be mean to catlovanz, I just don't think it's helpful telling someone something is good when it isn't. That is assuming they want to improve their photography.

Hi guys
Hey I really appreciate all critiques so not worries. I thought the first photo was out of focus and I know that I shake when I take photos. As for the second photo, the bee was moving, and I do use a point and shoot camera.
For your info, I used the SP mode and selected manual mode so I could access the macro setting.
Please never be worried that I will take critques badly as I'm here to learn and I really appreciate the feedback I have had so far.:)

Understandable - p&s dont give you a lot of control. What model do you have?
If you can set a large depth of field (small aperture, large number eg f/8 or f/11 if you can), maybe landscape mode (thought I'm guessing it may not let you focus closely if you dont set macro mode.....), bump the ISO, spot metering, single AF point and go from there.
Assuming you have any control over any of that hehe, most point and shoots are just 'good enough' for everyday landscape and whatnot. Macro (good, 1:1+ macro) is a very unique field with high technological (ie expensive) and technical skill requirements

Ok I'm using a fujifilm FinePixf480 and I don't seem to be able to change the dept of field, aperture etc. Its a little frustrating, but I'm hoping to learn a variety of techniques and when I start work next year, save up for a DSLR.

Smurff, wow I really like #2 for the colours and the way you have maintained focus only on the flower with the bee.

smurf pic 2 is cool, i like it, DOF maybe a bit too deep making subject matter less emphesised.
catlovanz might consider getting 2nd hand gears?

there is some good condition second hand gear around for good prices, is always something to consider :)

Thank you, yes I'm happy to buy second hand, just have to wait until I pay my for my new lappy and reduce the overdraft a wee bit :( But I will get there, and I'll be sure to ask for advice on the best deals :D.
