The D90 is the body i want but i have no clue what lens i should start with. My original idea was to go with a superzoom like the Tamron 18-270 VC but i have read many reviews and a lot of people don't seem very happy with it, especially Nikon users. So i looked at the Nikkor 18-200mm or the sigma equivalent but cannot decide.

I am beginning to give up and go for the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D and look for other lenses later.

Could anyone shed some light on what they think would be a good stater lens with someone looking at a nice but ultimately practical starter lens?

any advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

edit: budget would be no more than $800 for the lens/s

What's wrong with the two lenses you already own? Add an UWA and a 50 1.8 to those and you've got most eventualities covered.

I figured not many people would want to purchase my D60 body separately as it's more of an entry level dSLR so it would be more desirable as a kit. I thought this would be my chance to upgrade to better quality lenses and i know there are better options than what i own currently, it's just a matter of knowing what they are.

+ i find myself swapping the lenses over constantly and this is one reason why i was looking at the superzooms.

I doubt a superzoom would give you any better IQ than either of the lenses you currently own (not a Nikon user, so no first hand experience here but I hear good things about Nikon's kit lenses...). You might not have to change lens so often, but you pay for that privelege in terms of IQ usually.

The D60 will sell just fine on its own I reckon. You could stick the 18-55 with it if you're worried and replace with a Tamron 17-50 2.8. Excellent lens for the cash that would give you a little bit extra over the kit lens being constant 2.8.

I have just replaced my D70s with a D90 and found the Nikon 18-105 to be an inferior lens.
I was able to swap it for a Tamron 17-50 2.8 non VC lens (earlier model) and am happy with the results, it also has favourable reviews online.
My excellent Nikon film lens 28-85 gives inferior results on the D90 but the same series 70-210 gives excellent results.
The upshot is make sure you can test a lens first.

a friend of mine has the 18-200mm VR, seems quite happy with it and always shows good results from what i have seen. he uses a D300s though.

You cannot go past a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 for an absolutely amazing starter lens.

And no one would buy a D60 body alone. No one would go from an existing SLR to a D60. The D60 is a beginners camera. Sell it as a kit.
