Welcome to 2010 everyone!

Let's kick off the photo competitions with a theme we all love.

The theme is BOKEH

Competition guidelines:

Entries will close midnight Friday 29th of January (or thereabouts) and a poll will run for 1 week to decide on the winner.
Email an attached image to photographersonlinenz@gmail.com with your forum username. Please send an attached jpeg file. Do not send a link to a hosted image.
Photos submitted should be no larger than 800 x 800 and should be free of any watermarks.
These competitions are really for testing your creativity and interpretation of the theme so please go and take a NEW photo.
I'm confident we'll see some pretty spectacular entries so dust your off fast lenses and play!

Cheers,
Talan

and magello, Make sure your aperture is wide and best with the 50mm

i found it was possible with my kit lens. long lens at fullish zoom i think it was.
was not much a with a 1.8 or lens like that, but was still noticeable

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Exposure: 0.2 sec (1/5)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 90 mm

creamy background, just need a better subject and background lol
this was the can of drink i just finished, and the wall of the workshop, so nothing pretty :)

if you dont have a wide aperture lens, I think you can still achieve this, just need subject to be closer to camera, and have a HUGE distance between subject and background. Not sure if it is technically bokeh, but similar result.

this a pic i did with my 50mm at f1.8, compared to the one above with the kit lens, only difference in the back ground is how the 1.8 shapes the light reflections. but as i had no light reflections in the top one, there really quite the same effect.

In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image.

so really, its any out of focus that looks pleasing to the eye. its just easier to achieve with a fstop of 1.8 - 1.2 as you dof is shorter, so there is more out of focus dof. . . this is what i can gather from reading around.

You can do it with any lens, though the bigger the aperture the easier it is.

-Use longest focal length possible
-High ratio of subject-background:camera-subject distance (i.e. be close to the subject with the background far away)
