Hi

This photo was taken at Ohope beach and I was trying to capture my daughters carefree playing. http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/catlovanz/britt_beach3.jpg

Sorry to come across critical but I am sorry it really doesn't do anything for me. The top part is so blown out that is is difficult to see what she is doing and the pose does not suggest anything playfull.

Hi thanks for your comments, any feedforward on how I can improve?

As a general rule, a subject like this should be facing the (empty, larger) two-thirds, with her back to the smaller, third. That helps to get a better feeling of space. When facing the smaller, 1/3, it tends to feel boxed in, and as if she's facing into a wall, as opposed to looking at the background.
Does that make sense?

I can't quite understand the use of selective colouring on this one, it seems to serve no purpose as it isn't highlighting anything.

I'd try for a day with softer light, so you don't have such problems with the contrast. Give her some kind of prop to play with, so she's not worried about what to do.
