I need to buy a digital camera with manual aperture and shutter modes. Do I need to buy a dslr camera or are these features available on other more compact cameras?
DSLR will give you a better range, but digital point and shoots are ok if the finished image doesn't need to be high res.
When i need to snap a shot of something for trademe, or for showing in mechanical threads etc, i use the misses Fujifilm P&S.
Just turn it on, in auto and press, simple, perfect shot every time...but, if i need to print it, or blow it up, i will use the Canon DSLR every time.
Really does depen what your doing with it...

depends on your goal, and your budget. talk a bit more about what you want to do with it.

No, you dont have to buy a dslr to get these features.
I found the Canon g10 to be a great P&S camera . And everything one needs in a P&S . Image quality is great for a P&S,

I may be selling my 4 month old Nikon D60 twin Lens Kit + Extra Battery and 4GB SD soon, so if you ever decide on a DSLR keep me in mind. Ill no doubt post this in the 'Sales' thread when i'm ready.

The fact that the original question was for an 'intermediate' user, to me, signifies that he/she wants to move their photography beyond the realm of point and shoot (however many x zoom the camera may have).
Many fixed lens point and shoot digital cameras now have a huge array of features which seem to mimic a DSLR; however, shoot the same shots with each and you'll notice a difference.
Once you buy a fixed lens p&s camera, you are limited to what you can do.
An entry level DSLR won't be that much more expensive than a GOOD point and shoot camera, but infinitely more adaptable in the long run.
