I am looking to purchase my first DSLR camera and need some advice on which direction to go. The models I have been considering are Canon 40D and 500D and also the Nikon D90. . Am I better off buying the body and a lens seperately or going with a kit, baring in mind my budget is 1500-2k.

My first DSLR was a nikon D40x.
A very good begginers DSLR.
You should go with that then once you have learnt everything upgrade.

by the kit set up if it's your first, you'll have heaps of fun buy a 50mm 1.8 prime as well with that and a kit lens or two theres not much you can't do.

What are you going to take pictures of ?

My advice to someone buying there first DSLR would be to buy second-hand, as you can get some very good cameras for very little.
Like a Canon 20d, they can be picked up for around $500 .
It is a camera that will do for 90% of photographers out there.
Then spend the rest on lenses and lighting.

When you out grow that, look what you really need .

The reasoning is that" New" DSLRs are not new for long, and drop so much in value, and are updated so quickly.

While the d90 looks a good camera, i see little point in spending 75% of the budget on a body.

He wants to shoot sport, so to get a good lens for sports he is looking at least a 300mmf4 for about $1000 at least, portraits 50mmf1.8 about $150, that leaves about $350 for a wide lens , might be able to pick up a 28mmf2.8 for landscapes. And put a 20d with that and you have a $2k met.

What software comes with Nikon Bodies?
