nikon sb600 has given up?

on saturday my faithful sb600 gave up the ghost. it was almost like it short circuited/blew a fuse?

i am outside the warranty period (i believe) and the replacement cost will be around $400. is it worth me taking into nikon - imagining the repair cost to be substantial?

if you take it in, they may be able to cheak it to see whats rong for a few dollers, then give you a quote for the repair?
fire them an email?

they will charge you like 90 to just look at it
then will tell u what's wrong with it. i recommended you to send it in. might only be the tube.
