Hello there, I am wondering which Uni, college, or institute in NZ has the best reputation for it's photography facilities and course.

Also what would be the most sort after qualification in relation to photography?

I have recently got myself a Digital SLR camera and have taught myself how to work it (the internet is a great help). I want to study it further and be around others who are too, i love it and i don't want to miss a beat! And a qualification is always handy.
But i know i will have to move from where i live now and i don't want to make the wrong choice.

Preferably on the south island but i am open to any suggestions!

Hope someone can help me, Sophie

It difficult to say that one organisation may have a better photography course over the other. I think employer's may have a different view's depending on their own opinion, but this is uncommon.

I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Business at AUT, and I can tell you that no employer I have been interviewed by so far in my career has expressed any particular biased towards AUT or any other University. How well you express yourself and your skills will be the determining factor when employers consider you, not the organisation you studied at.

You may want to consider other options as well. Perhaps you could look into being a professional photographers understudy as a job while you complete your education. Or perhaps if you do this (be an understudy) you won't need a formal education in Photography, and your experience and portfolio will be enough proof of your skill for future employers.

David is quite right about the institution bias (in my experience anyway). A lot of it is down to experience and how you present yourself or what you have done in the past.

There are a few institutions that offer photography courses

UCol in Palmerston North
Unitec in Auckland
Raffles in Auckland
Media Design School in Auckand
Im even sure Elim at the University of Auckland has some photography papers.

Definately get in contact, get as much info as possible, ask around (like what you're doing now) to weigh up your options.

UoA doesnt offer photography papers. Only at the centre for continuing education (CEE) which is like $400 for a 6 week, one lesson a week course....
