Hey folks, my name is Magel, some people would know me here from NZH.

I decided to start something little for my entry level so I got hold of a Canon 300d. Came with EFS 18-55mm EFS (with its price, you can't go wrong) Nothing to out there, something nice and little to start with. I've always wanted to get into photography and follow my sister's path aswell.

Im also looking to take photography as a course next year. Anyone know a good place to do it?

I'm looking to learn new stuff from you guys!

welcome to the forum Magel, 300d is a good choice as an entry level SLR i recommend you practise framing your shots with 50mm glass before you move onto other stuff.

what glass do you have at the moment?

Yeah, i am looking at my first upgrade atm to 50mm f/1.8. I heard they are really worth it and for the price of it, its really good!

I have a 18-55mm lens f/3.5-5.6.

Also just want to double check, "f/3.5-5.6" is the aperture correct?

yes, this means that at the minimum focal length (18mm) the aperture can go up to 3.5, and at the maximum focal length (55mm) it can go up to 5.6 only.

thats why the 50mm 1.8 is so good because it gives really good results with great depth of field. Also its easier to take handheld photos in low light because you can take the aperture right back to 1.8 and have a really fast shutter speed.

So the 50mm with f/1.8 means that i cant adjust the aperture correct? I am lurking around for the best price for it atm. atm, average price is $195

Not quite, the f# on the lens are displaying their lowest/widest apeture. So in the case of the 50mm f1.8 the lowest/widest it can go to is f1.8 as aposed to your f3.5-5.6 which at it's widest zoom (18mm) the lowest/widest apeture is f3.5 (the first part of the number) and when its zoomed in (55mm) the lowest/widest apeture is f5.6. Hope that isnt too confusing :p
