Its even better if you can keep it under $400 so you dont have to pay GST.
I'm just starting living in NZ so I'd like to ask you people, what is the tax policy for goods bought overseas? I understood I'll have to pay GST, just over NZ $ 400 products?
another thing, stronger NZ dollar doesn't make the imported products cheaper here? You know, one have to spend less NZ $ to buy a x.xx US $ excinting photographic product.
just trying to understand.

Luiz:
Photographic equipment is not subject to any import tax EXCEPT GST. However the IRD waives GST where the GST amount would be less than $50 NZD ( $400 NZD excluding GST is $450 including GST). The trick here is that also includes the cost of the shipping. EG: Cost to buy something is $390 NZD, but shipping is $20 NZD, then that totals $410 NZD so GST will be charged for a total of $461.25.
Relevant NZ Customs Page (http://www.customs.govt.nz/importers/Private+importers/Customs+Charges.htm)
Stronger dollar only has immediate impact (cheaper products) when you are importing it yourself. If you are buying product someone else imported, they may have imported it when the dollar was weaker and would lose money if they sold it to you cheaper than they got it for.
Does that help?

sure it did. thanks for the valuable informations.
about the dollar: I agree with you, but this a dyamic thing, the dealers are buying when the dollar are stronger as well, and then they can sell it cheaper. It's easy, when the dollar is weak the parallel importers close their shops at Queen St and Newmarket, conversely they are opened it when the NZ$ it's stronger, because they rely on good prices to sell.
cheers
