Great day in Wellington yesterday (it feels like ages since it hasn't rained and been freezing cold) for some local club XC racing on Mt Vic. It's the first time I've shot mountain biking and I really should look at investing in some off the camera flash as the built in flash on the 40D was pretty limiting at times...

Gotta love the red eye from the built in flash! But at least you used a flash! I've been official photographer for most of Sth East Qld's XC endurance racing for the past couple of years (just recently gave it away actually) and I can tell you that these are pretty good shots.
I also use a 40D but have the Speedlite 580 ll and it's gold for this stuff. Having the ability to shoot at high speed with the flash makes life much easier.

Also what I like about your shots is you haven't just filled the frame with the rider only. You've shown a little of what they are riding in terms of the trail. So many others I've seen just zoom in to get a shadowy shot of the riders portrait and not much else.

Good effort.
