I found this (actually my friend found ;) ) really interesting blog post (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/10/making-space-photo/) about how an astrophotographer creates a layered photo of space in post which turns out amazing. Basically you take a series of shots, monochrome, filtered etc, then layer them all together and thats how they get the effect that the shot was taken from space in some far off galaxy.
The final shot in the post is amazing, and im finding it hard to believe you can create these kind of shots from behind the atmosphere.
