Hey guys, just saw some of Talan's posts on GamerHub and decided to come check it out... Nice site you've got set up :)
I'm still pretty new to photography... Just bought my DSLR earlier this year and am still learning heaps!
I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a new lense for my Canon 1000D. I have the kit lense that came with it (18-55mm) and am looking for something with a bit more zoom. However I'd also like it to be pretty quick in focusing time / shutter speeds, so I dont get much blurring. I want to be using it for sports such as motor racing and boat racing, where I will have to stand behind a fence or on the beach... Therefore I need zoom and quick focusing time / shutter speeds.
Hopefully I've given enough info, and I'm very keen to participate in some upcoming photo comps, hopefully a topic comes up that I enjoy!
Thanks!

Welcome!! :D
I use a 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM lens which i love. On a cropped sensor body you get about 420mm equivilant :D Nice and fast, not quite as fast as the L lenses bout thats to be expected.
I'm selling if you are interested. I've gone FF now and i'm used to the longer cropped sensor zoom so need to upgrade

Hey, thanks for the replies
Sorry, whats a cropped sensor body? It sounds like a modification to the body of my camera?
Would you be able to provide some links to the lenses you're talking about? Both the L series on and your one, that'd be sweet
Thanks guys

Thanks PureKiwi, nice link. I think I understand now.
Also I was looking at www.aucklandcamera.com for an estimate on pricing of these lenses, I was kinda hoping for something under or around $400. I think I found your one Cory and it was over $2000... Far too expensive for me at the moment.

What would the difference between your lens and the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-III-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) be? I'm also looking at the CANON EF90-300MM F4.5-5.6 USM (http://www.aucklandcamera.com/product.php?id=10307) but I cant find a review for that one on that website.
EDIT:
Just read the reviews on the website and it basically looks slower, and of lower build quality (not so smooth and stuff)
Would this cause any unwanted effects to the final images that a beginner photographer could notice? However in saying beginner I mean I do want to continue with my photography, and want a lens that would last me.

Well for one, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-III-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) doesn't have Image stabilization which is a godspend at the 300mm focal length and helps keep things steady in low light. I think it lets you 3 stops slower than non IS. The autofocus is faster on mine, which if you are interested in sports photography it'll be a must. I was using mine the other day for the Blossome featival drags and it was a very dull day but i was still shooting at +1/1250. Plus the image quality will be better on my lens.
Hope this helps

That was my thoughts when i brought my lens. The only reason i'm selling mine is because my main body is now a full frame and i've lost that extra focal length.

If you are wanting to spend a maximum of $400 you will have to make some sacrifices.
The main thing to consider is that the addtional zoom you want will mean shooting at F/5.6 at your maximum focal length. This will have a significant impact on the shutter speeds you will be wanting to freeze your fast moving subjects. You will need to boost ISO in any conditions other than sunny, cloudless, mid day light.
The crop sensor means that the digital sensor that records what is coming through the lens is smaller than a traditional 35mm film frame. This results in the 500D focal lengths have a multiplication factor 1.5/1.6. A 100mm lens will have an effective focal length of around 160mm. To shoot sport from a spectator position you need at least 400mm, so a lens with a maximum focal length/zoom of 300mm should be sufficent, subject to the sacrifices above.
Hope this helps.

hey enzyme just reading thru the thread, there this is another lens that could be possible for you that is closer to your price range. its the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens. its around the $450 mark, as Cory said you will have the sacrifice something. image quality and its a bit storter on the long focal end, but it does have IS. but the price is within your range.
if you want to look at a good review of it go here.
