Oh you copy! :p

For noob Canon users I fully recommend going EF 50mm F1.8 II if you are looking to upgrade from your kit lense. The lense is cheap as hell and you can get some pretty nice images from it. Also having a prime lens teaches you to compose pics and not be lazy and just zoom in/out.

In saying that the 'nifty fifty' has a lot of flaws e.g. the cheap plastic construction, noisy and slow autofocus, and some people have issues with backfocusing.

Look forward to your detailed review and photos Dave!

Hi, everyone. This seems like a good place to introduce myself.

Currently I have:
Nikon D40
18-55mm (that's the old non-VR version)
55-200mm VR
SB-400 speedlight
Lowepro Micro Trekker 100 (for when I want to carry all my gear) and D-Res 40AW (for when I want to travel light).

At some stage this year I want to replace the 18-55mm with an 18-105VR and I guess I should also get myself a decent tripod.

At the moment I don't have a lot of money to spend on gear or time to spend on using it, but nevertheless I'm thrilled with the results that I'm getting out of this kit. I picked up the D40 for a very sharp price late last year and whilst this model is getting a bit long in the tooth I can see it serving me well for at least another couple of years.

Howdy all. I'm new here.
Anyway, just sold too quickly aging Canon 400D and my 4 lenses for it and thought I'd go for something a little different, so I bought into a Sigma SD14.
Anyone else in NZ own one of these?
It's still a very new camera that I'm trying out but here are my thoughts on it here if anyone is interested:

till very recently used to be the Sony DSC-H10, served me very well.
Now it's the 450D with kit lens (18-55 f3.5-5.6) and the 50mm f1.8 Mk II aka the plastic fantastic. Looking at some filters, but then I'm going to stop for a long while... I hope :P

Canon 50D here, with the 10-22mm, 17-55mm, 70-200 and 100mm macro.

On the wishlist is a new tripod, as mine is an old aluminium Manfrotto 055C with a busted leg. All in good time!

How do you find the 7D?

Raizer

At the moment I've only got a 1000D, 18-55mm IS, 75-300mm kit lenses and a 50mm f/1.8, but I pretty much just use the 18-55mm all the time.
Am going to be upgrading to a 7D and Tamron 17-50mm pretty soon.

Oh and I've got a SX10is point and shoot as well, but that barely gets used any more (lol last time I used it I went to turn the lens to zoom it before I realized what I was doing!)

How do you find the 7D?

Camera hasn't arrived yet :D

Going off the testing I did before buying, it's excellent. I was torn between the 7D and a 1D3 and ended up going for the 7D when I put low ISO pics side by side. The 7D simply resolves more detail. Get over the fact that it's not full frame and will never take the quality of pics that the 5D2 can manage, and it's probably the most rounded DSLR Canon make barring the 1D4. If you can't afford a 1D and only want one camera that'll cope with pretty much everything that's chucked at it then I reckon you can't go far wrong.

It's magnificently built for the money - a substantial improvement over my old 40D (which I was always very happy with). I'll post some shots when I get some 'proper' ones ;)

Edit: The S90 is a brilliant camera. Anyone interested in a tiny, pocket-sized camera with some serious photographic potential should have a play with one. Superb :)

Had the 7D for a couple of days now and am still putting it through its paces and learning how to use the incredible amount of new stuff that's in this camera compared to my old 40D. I've been lucky enough to test it alongside a 5D2 and it's been an interesting experience.

Some initial thoughts:

It's very nicely put together. Sturdy and handles well. An improvement over the 40D that I was always very happy with. Button layout is a big improvement.

The AF is superb. I've shot with it in full auto 19-point selection mode since I got it and it's hardly missed a shot even in AI Servo. Tracking cars at 8fps with scenery between myself and the target was no problems for it. I did two 20 shot RAW bursts and I had 2 shots that had lost focus. Haven't scratched the surface of the AF options and I'll need to put it through some stiffer tests, but it's looking to be at least as good as the AF in my 1Ds so far.

The video/liveview switch and button is a fantastic addition. Customisability and interface is also superb. I like the quick settings menu and the ability to totally reassign all your buttons - even the DOF preview button :)

Wireless flash control appears to work very well and is pretty easy to set up. Video quality is stunning. Looking forward to using this a lot.

Image quality is very good. Comparing similar images shot at similar settings at the same time on 5D2 and 7D, the 7D produces more noise and resolves a touch less detail. It can't quite match the clarity of the 5D2 but make no mistake about it, IQ is lightyears ahead of the 40D. 'Noise' is very fine and I can only describe it as being less digital looking than on previous bodies I've owned. Some people might find low iso shots have too much noise, but you'd have to be printing huge to see any real evidence in images. 6400iso is eminently usable if you're pushed - I'd say it's as good as 1600 on my 40D as it cleans up so well. No banding either :)

Very happy with it so far :D

Hey guys!

New here. Thought it would be a good first post to say what gear i got..

I use a Canon EOS 550D.

Have a kit lens but a nice one though.

EF-S 18-135mm

Not a cheap buy but it's a hobby I really want to get into and could even consider doing a bit of professional work once I learn the ropes! I also have a SDHC Extreme Card that helps with the HD video haha.

My Name is Cameron and currently live and work in Hamilton, NZ. I grew up with great interest in Photography, Audio & the Film Industry. Have work overseas as an Audio Engineer and in various roles in TV & Film (even stills photographer). I am not experienced or qualified but I am a very quick learner and just gave it my best shot!

Cheers!

I really like it. The only thing I would suggest is that if you're doing video work with the camera it's not really suited... As my 40d doesn't shoot video I wasn't too worried and to be honest I would have still bought it anyway and got a second video head later!

I just like how quickly you can adjust it.

Hi Folks,
I've scanned through all the pages and only one person has purchased an Olympus camera.

I am an Olympus user from way back. Bit of a shame Olympus is not popular in NZ.

Here's what I've got...

Body:
Olympus E300
Olympus E620

Lens:

40-150mm Zoom
70-300mm Super Zoom

Accessories:

And arriving next week a Panosaurus Panoramic Head

Very tempted to change to Canon 600D with the 1080p video, but will cost too much to change. And hearing about Canon's service record puts me off.
