I like it bananaman. It brings out the shineyness and cleaness of the silvers while the darks give it more of a mysterious feel.

I haven't done much automotive photography, but would it help having a strobe underneath the motor , as a rim light?

I was happy with it as a first attempt. We were using two transparent umbrellas and two off camera flashes. Could have positioned the umbrellas in a better spot but it was in the shed and a load of crap around the front of the car.
