Guess I will have to learn and improve the hard way huh.
BaNaNaMaN, How did you go about getting accreditation? Am interested as i shoot motor sports too and love it but get's hard to gain access etc when your not with a mag etc.

I miss the green box mode on the 1 Series ;)
never noticed a green box?....my 1 series has no markings at all, in fact the dial must have fallen off on a previous owner :p.

I found once I moved to the 1Ds3 I shot only in manual mode. Whats the point of having all those features if you only ever us a auto mode
Mind you still a lot I dont use.
Green box you only find on XX or XXX series (auto mode)
Sometimes emoticons cannot portray sarcasm so well ;).
I do miss my 30D sometimes but not for auto modes that's for sure!
I usually shoot only manual but have been using Tv / Av and getting good results with motor sports except sometimes the camera chooses a crazy aperture or speed that I don't want which can be a pain at times.

Phys: You require two letters from editors saying that they will use you as a freelance and two tear sheets with proof of publication of your images.
I have provided images for the truth magazine and MVP magazine which is how I got accreditation, and my partner is an accredited motorsports photographer too so that helps.

I got a 30D for my Sigma 50-500 as the Sigma was rubbish on my 5D.
I found with my last event at Puke I set to manual and only adjusted ISO

Tear sheets??
This year (I have a kind of real job) I just really want to get some practice, next year I hoped to try get some published but not sure where to start. As for finding a mag to publish my shots :(.
Some of my shots I personally like but have no idea if they are good enough for publication use.
Just to get near the track proves to be hard sometimes but I can understand why but I have shot at the Drifting so far which was great.

It is a great camera, sold mine with only 6000 shutters recently to get a faster body, was a very capable camera I shot my first club day at puke in manual and learned some valuable lessons about settings :D.

Hey im Jarred from NZH.
Currently using a 450D with an 18-200 kit lens (Best kit lens ive ever seen) and am pretty much too poor for anything else.
My obsessions at the moment are HDR and long exposures at night, finding some awesome stuff although the night shots can be tricky as my lens isnt amazing :(

Hey!
I'm Becks and I'm currently studying Photography again (long story), I'm based in Auckland and do some freelance work.
Have mostly done event, wedding, product and fashion work.
Currently waiting to get my hands on a Canon 5D Mark II once I have saved up enough pennies as a poor student :p
Hey
I'm Nat, not involved in photography in any professional way, just do it cos I enjoy it.
Don't have any formal training but me and Mad Hatter Project have been going on a few expeditions recently so have been sponging off her knowledge <3
Regularly take photos of clubbing events/gigs for websites to try and learn too.
Hey Nat and Backs,
Firstly welcome and would love to see what you guys work is like so please do start posting up some photos of yours!
( 5D MKII is a good camera, if i was a canon shooter that's what i would be getting!!)

Hey All, I'm Andrew (not Dot).
I'm a kiwi from the Taihape area (Kawhatau Valley) but have lived in the UK and France for the last 15 years.
I spend my days making skis (whitedot freeride) and have only just got into Photography. I couldn't afford the €2500 daily rate for photo shoots so am doing it myself and loving it and I'm too old to keep up with the pro skiers so taking shots gives me a great excuss to stop and get my breath back.
As I didn't have a load of lenses and the reviews were great, I went for a Sony A700 and am really enjoying using it.
Love the site, I've only be using the camera in anger for the last 9 months and have already picked up some great tips.
Cheers all

Hey guys, I'm Chris.
I've been shooting semi seriously off and on for the last 4-5 years probably, but always been interested in snapping away. I'm probably going to be the young dinosaur of the group. I shoot both 6x4.5 and 4x5 film and love every second of it.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys get up to around here. It's always nice to see what other local photographers make of this rather picturesque group of islands we have here.

Gidday, I'm Trav, aka crocos, aka Robo Git (and a couple of other aliases)
I've been mucking with photography for about 2.5 years now, went to do the same course as Steph (Availablelight), but frankly it bored me and I haven't completed it. So no real formal training - I love to muck around with my photos and experiment with effects and odd-ball lenses.
Also quite fond of low-light photography, which is the biggest reason that I want to upgrade my camera from a 350D :D

Hi
I took up photography last Xmas. Ive been hunting for over 10 years and fishing for over 25 yrs so decided to take up photography as I see many places that many wouldnt.
I like landscape photography but am focusing on Wildlife photography at the moment.
I am based in Hawkes Bay and cant seem to find any other photographers here like myself who I can bounce ideas off and meet up with to do photo sessions. So I am limited to talking over the net.
Kit is Canon 40D, with standard lens kit 35-70mm, 70-200mm 2.8 IS, teleconvert 1.4x, marumi lens protector and circular polariser.
Any Hawkes Bay wildlife or landscape photographers online want to hook up?

Hi all, been taking photos for quite a few years now.. 50+... almost got the hang of it . Joined a local photo club a couple of years back and have got a few successes in club and national competitions.. then they shifted me up to B grade.. now its harder. Started out in 35mm with a Braun Gloriette (anyone remember them?) after various 127/120 toy cameras., then graduated to a real SLR with an Exakta for my 21st BD.. then onto Nikon F and have been collecting Nikon stuff for years.. currently D3 and a few modern lenses.. 14-24,24-70.70-200, 105VR macro,50 1.8.... now I am unemployed(no not retired...yet)... with plenty of time to take photos...sic

Hello!
I've just signed up to the forum as I'm coming over to NZ - will be living in Wellington - from the UK for 4 months (hopefully longer if I manage to secure a job and work visa!) at the start of September. The forum looks similar to a very popular one that I've been using here in the UK, talkphotography, so I'll feel right at home! Am looking forward to seeing a bit of the country and taking some great photos to make friends and family back home envious!
Anyway, just a quick hello!

I am an architect and urban planner, and enjoying photography for almost 3 years now.
I work with 3D presentations, CAD technology. So I do love to work with lights and shadows and different shapes. Maybe it's the reason I started to enjoy photography.
I started usig a Fujifilm camera.. today I have my lovely 450D Canon. One day I hope i can get enough money to buy a real professional camera, even if Im using it just as a hobby. Who knows ...

Anyway - I am Stacey but known all over the web as BlueRose (or variants thereof). I live in CHCH and have done for about 10 years. Currently working in Corporate IT but have worked in IT for nearly 20 years doing one thing or another.
Hobbies involve photography (obviously), cooking and food, reading SF and Fantasy books, watching TV series not actually on NZ TV, have a medieval persona in my local SCA, pandering to my two Birman cats, swing dance, bellydance, digital art, 3D fractals and just general mooching online.
Ive been a point and shoot gurl for many years and went digital about 4 yrs ago. Due to some fortuitous circumstances I have recently been able to purchase a Canon 40D and am now totally at a loss of how to drive it any other way except Auto, and I *want* to take my training wheels off, so be patient with all my questions (I have already requested a Beginners section in the Forum which was kindly granted)
Anyway enuf yapping, nice to be here, looks like a good place to hangout in real time. If you want to check out my pix, the link is in my sig.
I have also started myself up a "Learning to use my Camera" blog, and if you want to check it out its here - ideas, feedback and volunteers for guest posters welcome!

I had been using my Canon SX10is for about 4 months (after upgrading from a Fuji finepix S5800 which really started my interest!).
I am now shooting with a 1000D and kit 18-55mm lens which I was given for my birthday.
Some of my better pics can be found on my photoblog which is in my signature :)
And I will no doubt post a thread to get some c&c on my pics soon enough lol

Howdy folks
Posting for the first time after a couple of weeks of lurking. I heard about the forum after an email from Bernzfotos to (I think) the Wellington Flickr group.
Anyhoo, I'm in Wellington, putting a great deal of time and effort into my photography with a view to one day maybe making a living from it.

Hey, well thanks for that :)
Been close to a couple of years with the SLR now, before that I had a compact that was mostly for snapshots but I still tried to take a lot of good photos when they caught my eye. The interest was there since my teens but it took reasonably priced digital to make the hobby really viable, and the DSLR has made all the difference in the world. Now if I could only get enough paid work to pay off the equipment... Then I could buy more equipment!

I'm new to photography having scored a Canon 450d earlier this year when I flooded my Lumix TZ3 while diving. The insurance company couldn't find me another Lumix that would fit my underwater housing so I took the money and bought my 450d. I only wish I had put more thought into it and gone up a few notches in camera.
I'm a hunter and diver and see plenty of places most people dont and love sharing them. I havnt got a huge amount to show yet but I have a month off over Christmas so will get a few goodies hopefully

Hi I'm Angela
Have loved photography for forever but have always been a "film" girl. Gave in to pressure last year and got myself a Canon 450d which I am totally in love with. Have spent way to much time in front of children taking photos of them so ready to branch out now and start thinking of other ways to use my camera!
Looking forward to lots of helpful info and learning heaps of here!

Switch to aperture priority right now, you'll start learning faster :) Then head for manual as soon as you can.

Good morning....
Welcome to our small community hope to see your work
Hey guys n girls, I'm Kat :)
It started when I went rock fishing and got stuck in a cove because someone got the tides wrong, we had to swim back around the corner to dry land causing my camera to go in the drink (my life>a camera) ended up replacing it with a 400D + lenses.
Had no idea how to use this camera so I've spent hours reading all about my camera and have also taken on the Diploma in Professional Photography course through The Photography Institute (alot harder than i expected).
Halfway through this course now and feeling like I'm actually achieving something, hoping to gain some more knowledge/ideas through this forum also.
Thanks to Talan for coming over to GamerHub to let us know about the site :) even though you got flamed in the process :(

Gidday. Just joined. My wife and I are keen photographers, although work tends to take a lot of our time.
We have a Nikon D70 and a few extra gadgets as well as a Canon point and shoot (which can be very handy at times). We look forward to going through the forums, learning from you all and hopefully impart anything of use in return.

Hi all,
I'm paul, and was invited by Talan [thx for the link here] to have a look around, after he saw some of my pics here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/mata-saina
I've been playing around with camera's for about 15 yrs; started with a Nikon 35mm SLR; lost interest for a few years, until a new invention called the digital SLR came in, so got a nikon D70. Moved onto a Nikon D200, until that was stolen, so moved over to Canon (a 40D; and just got a 5d mk1).
This is still a hobby for me really but scored my first paid gig with Dawn Raid concert last week. Looking at taking all this to another level one day, though.

Hello
I screwed up and started a thread moments before finding this one. Fail
If someone wants to delete the thread... (I can't see an option)

Greetings all.
I've been taking photos for about 4 years now but in the last 6 months I've hit a bit of a roadblock and have been getting a bit frustrated and bored. I class myself as a 'landscape' photographer, but lately have struggled to find anything nearby that I havn't already taken photos of.
So I'm looking to expand a bit, focus on some different areas, start getting up earlier to get the decent light, join some groups (*wave*), meet some people and eventually move closer to the city again (in the northern suburbs of the shore atm...).
So. I'm thinking of inspiring a new wave of..uhh.. inspiration with a new body. I'm currently making do with a D50, but I'm looking at a D300s or D700 quite likely. Question 1 - why the hell do we pay so much here compared to Oz (and the states). I can get a D700 for almost $2k cheaper from B&H Photo than from the non-parallel dealers here. How can people afford to buy from them? Question 2 - there is no Question 2.
So anyway, long rambly post. hi :envy:

Hi ya! My name is Lou, and I have had a camera attached to my arm for the last 14 years. I live out Waitakere way, and have a part time photography business (for the last 4 years).. Things are just starting to kick off a bit, which is exciting. I have a real job too, lol, I'm a preschool teacher.
I shoot with an entry level Olympus dSLR now, which I am very attached to. Have tried other cameras, but we don't seem to bond! Pre digital, I was a Pentax Spotmatic girl all the way. ;)
Lovely to find you all here, look forward to reading a bit more. :D

Hi guys & gals. Thought I better say Hi before posting anything ;)
I'm a self taught amateur, started with SLR film cameras and currently just have a Sony Cybershot & 60gig Sony digi cam.
I've been evaluating a Canon 500d & Nikon d5000 and have pretty much decided to go for the Nikon. I find it easier to handle and I like some of the features the Canon doesn't have. The tilt screen being one, even though the pixel count is lower and the in camera editing. Don't get me wrong though... I think they are both very good cameras. I can also use my other Nikon lenses & my tele converter.
I'm going to get the kit to start of with, 15-55mm & 55-250mm lenses.
I look forward to being a regular poster and learn a few things from the more experienced on here :)

Please...DON"T laugh.
Went and bought my Nikon D5000 twin lense kit yesterday morning at 10.00am. I got the best deal from Noel Leeming in Manukau. Purchased and extra battery, 8gig Extreme SD card and a back pack. The Nikon back packs they had were crap, so I got the canon one instead. Just got wifey to remove the label.
Anyway...rushed home, put the battery on charge, fitted the neck strap and adjusted it correctly, inserted the SD card, was getting the hurry up from the wife to get to the War Birds show at Ardmore, times up 11.30, had to go, fitted the battery and headed off to the show. When we got there, I carefully put the camera on and made sure I had everything and then we headed off down and found a great possy to get a good view for getting some shots. We waited a little while for it all to start happening (had a couple of smokes) Then it started, turn the camera on, bring the camera to my eye............................................... ....
(I said no laughing)
With all the rushing around and the hurry up signals...
I HADN"T INITIALISED THE CAMERA
Didn't have the manual with me... still sitting on the bench at home. Stood there looking like a dick with a nice new camera and not taking any pictures. Had to stay for the first air display for wifey and missed getting some good shots.
Anyway, after that we shot home, I set the camera up, shot quickly through the menu to find continuous shoot mode. I drove back to Ardmore, found a good possy and took 500 frames of the final display. I got some good shots that I can see on the LCD. Have just got to setup my computer and get them all on there. Will post a couple when I've done that.
Now the fun begins.... learning to use my camera & lenses correctly :D
haha no worries man... just have the camera with you almost every time you go out for fun then you will learn pretty quickly. try shooting on M all the time this will teach you the significance of : lens sharpness, bokeh, aperture and shutter speed.
I guess i better leave some info.
Started out with a love of American cars and drag racing, so as a teenager (maybe 15?) used a cheap and nasty instamatic...
Gave up for a while as i couldn't afford an SLR, then finally brought a Pentax P30T when i was 20 and decided to learn how to use it.
Never did get any formal training, but moved to digital and ended up shooting Drift for D1NZ for a while, then freelance features (photos and editorial) for REV, with a few for PCAR, TARMAC, Automag and Autotrader.
Was Editor for REV for a while, and now i just do odds and sods (ads, photos, a bit of design).
No training, so excuse me if i don't understand some of the jargon, either in photography or with th e Adobe suite...

I think i've always been interested in photography and i think digital photography is the holygrail of photography since film. I had always been quite obsessed with good photo quality and bought my first DSLR 3 years ago (A100) now i've moved on to using an A900 FF and never looked back since.
I love photography and would be keen to meet like minds in this journey of photographic discovery.... not sure how active this community is on outings and such... but let me in on some gatherings if there is to be one....

Another new member here. I'm an ex-pat kiwi living in Perth W.A.
A relative newbie to photography. I took it as a subject at high

Hey all. Came across this forum today.
I got my dslr in Feb 2008 and haven't really put it down since., I'm a canon girl. I'm currently doing my teaching degree at the moment which has meant I haven't had as much time for photos lately.
I really enjoy taking photos of people, and my poor girls (who are 4 and 7) have had a camera shoved in their faces over the past two years!! I must be doing something right though and I've got two weddings booked for the summer season coming up, and a family portrait. I've also been doing a lot of commerical work (which unfortunately I don't get paid for or get credit for) which I'm stopping now, due to commitments (I initally liked the idea of seeing my photos being published in the paper etc).
I'm also very keen on macro photography as well.
So, hi everyone, look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi people. My name is Dennis. People at work call me DK (like Drift King in the movie Tokyo drift) because my surname is Kee and i love cars. Funny thing is i ain't no boy racer, i am a responsible driver:)
I am 32 year old, doctor during daytime but always eager to get out there to shoot photos when weather permits. I have only been shooting for a year, recently bought a Nikon D90. Also joined the Auckland Photography society at Remuera recently but find that the atmosphere there is a bit serious. I am hoping to know more young photographers and perhaps get out there together to shoot photos.

Hey all,
Really glad I found this place!
A little about me....
I am Rob, and I run Canvart where we print photos onto canvas.
I first developed an interest in photography in the 90's and got my first SLR in 2001. Photography fast became my main past time, and like a lot of you on here I am also mad about cars.
I started off working in IT, doing mainly website development as my day job, and getting out and about after work with my camera, slowly setting up a photography business. While trying to find something cool to do with my photos I came across printing onto canvas, so put all my savings into a printer and started printing my own. When I say my, I actually mean 'our' My good wife Jane is also a photographer and my wonderful business partner too :-)
From there, people started asking if we could print their photos too, and what started as a part time business run from home, is now a full time show running out of its own custom built studio, and I love every minute of it ;-)
I have always been a country boy at heart, and while working in the CBD of the capital was fun, it wasn't for me. So we shifted down to Lumsden, a small rural town in Southland, from Wellington about 4 years ago.
My days are now pretty full between the local Volunteer Fire Brigade and Canvart, but whenever I do get spare time I like to combine my two passions - my camera and my car, and get out to take photos in the beautiful countryside that is at my fingertips.
I am just a few weeks away from becoming a dad, so am stoked about that too!
So yeah, that is about me in a nutshell ;-)

Wolfie from Paraparaumu Beach looking for like minded people to share knowledge and to share the joy of photography.
As noted from posting in this thread, camera clubs with serious atmosphere will definitely make amateur like me uncomfortable. Would prefer a more casual and relaxing gathering in cafe instead.

I'm Jess, am from the Manawatu and have been photographing for a few years.
My aesthetic is quite 'dark' but I choose this style because I feel it represents me as a person and communicates my messages better.
I look forward to learning about you all and learning as much as I can about photography - critique is always welcomed!!

Hi there!
My name is Stephane, I'm from France and believe me this is far far away from NZ! I made the trip twice to check this out! :D
Why twice? Because on the first time I just fell in love with the land, and I needed a new "fix" 4 years later. And I think I'm still addicted ;o)
Mainly interested in landscape and aviation photography, I'll shared some of my preferred shots from NZ, and of course from France... but also from the US or China if you're interested.;)
Cheers!

Oh yea, there are still some issues with my website that i havent had a chance to fix yet, mainly issues with Internet Explorer.
I really want to try and get into just local sporting Photography, also i had plans of trying to start a local sporting website with news/Photos and forum etc but ive put that on hold for a wee bit.
Im hoping i can just keep practicing with sports on Saturday afternoons and work on from there

ahhh im using IE here at work, will have another look when i get home, i use safari at home.
what i have been looking to do for my targa photos, is something like the smugmug, were you have an account and load your photos, set a price and people buy from there, digital copys can be downloaded and prints sent.
and then i was just goin to hand out cards. kinda make my photos work for me kinda thing.
its not anything amazing, but its a step in the right direction?
one hard thing could be getting releases, but if your selling to the person in the picture, this isnt an issue i would think.

you have some really nice photos on there, but if you want to be a sports photographer, thats the direction you protfolio will need to be.
possibly get out and email/call/go see some small local sports club leader, talk to the coachs, ask if you can take photos to build your profile. ( these photos are for you use, not free to give away )
once you get to know them after a many few games ( as you will say hi to them and have a quick chat before the game ) then you could introduce the idea of selling photos to the teams/familiys.
if your prompte, easy to deal with etc, this is all practice and profile building.
then when you think ur ready to take the next step, well, i dont know, havnt done it before, so can help even less with ideas there hahaha
but it wont happen in a month or two, its something to work at it may tak a year or two before you ready to even try to ask the bigger clubs. i dont know.
or you may get to that point and instead of asking the club, you go looking for a paper sports photography role, or a magasine?
there must be plenty of options out there if you willing to put the time in to set yourself up in the start and never sell yourself short!
i think its been said on here photography is 80% bisness, 20% taking photos.
im not sure if thing work this way in real live, but this is how i would go about it.

I'm guessing that lot of amateur (as in, hobbyist) photographers would rather keep their hobby as a hobby. Professional photography is a tiring, thankless job at best, with demanding deadlines and irregular hours, so I can see why.
Of course, YMMV :D
Paul.

you can always try getting a FlickR (www.flickr.com) account. they can not completely stop it from happing but with a good water mark and disabling download it can help.
there is still a few loop holes with a pretty impossible to fix unless you have your own site, but it all helps.

My name is Mark and I have been collecting canon manual focus fd gear. I work at the film school in wellington, and we shoot grad films on an ARRI 16SR so manual photography is important.
