Had the Canon 17-85 crap out...(this is common apparently) so, while i think about paying the exorbitant repair price, i'm gonna replace it with either:

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM ($830ish)

or

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS ($960ish)

Dilemma, as i don't know if the Sigma will be better quality than the Canon, and i'm torn between the 135mm (over the 70mm) of the Canon and the F2.8 (over the F3.5) of the Sigma...

What would YOU choose?

By the way, it's on a 40D.

I'm open to other options as long as they are no more than a grand...

This is my MAIN lens, as the 100-400L is used mainly for motorsport...

No pressure but i am looking to buy one of them tomorrow arvo...

Tamron 17-50 2.8 every time (without spending four times as much at least). $609 from Expert Infotech.

50 is a bit too short though...

Had a look at the Canon EF-S 15-85...but gonna be well over budget...

Can give ups to the Tamron 17-50mm and Sigma 17-70mm. Very affordable and well priced pieces of equipment. Looked on Trademe? Few for good prices on there:

and

Good luck!
