First id like to say hello since this is my first post , found site Via D-photo

As stated im after a new camera i currently use a Cybershot DSC-P10 , Iv had this for about 7 years :/ but as im getting more into photography i need a better camera because im limited in what i can do , and id like a big camera that i can feel in my hands

I take a few diffrent kinda of photos so could say im in the everything category . people , landscapes and so on

These are the ones iv been looking at , but as I'm not an expert id like all the advice i can

Been looking at the new Canon 500D seen some pretty good reviews ( dont realy like the plastic feel to it but i think i could put up with that :)

And also the Nikon D90 seen some good reviews , front what iv read and understand these 2 camera are pretty similar

Also had good feedback on the Canon 40d

Ill properly go for a lens kits and i don't really no much about lens at this stage , its its properly going to do me for abit ?

anyway still like some advice on what to get as i said im in no way a guru and this will shamefully be my third camera :)

The Canon 500D is a good camera but to me its not really for photographers (for me anyway) cos IMO Canon have been putting more time on the video capability side and lesser on the picture side with the 500D. The 40D is a great camera. Its one of the best cameras to come out from Canon IMO. The price is well worth it and it works well with L lenses like the 24-70L. Plus they'll be getting cheaper because they've stopped manufacturing it. Thumbs up for the 40D and the size of it is good also. Fills the hands nicely and the weight is good cos if your using a long lens, it balances out nicely.

The kit lens for the 40d will do you good until you get sick of it and youll want something faster. And a tip with lenses, the smaller the f stop (f1.8 etc) means the faster the lens which will be great if you shoot in low light.

Dont know much about Nikon so cant really judge their stuff. Wait for Haim or EGD to talk about Nikon. But all i know is Carl Zeiss makes reaaaalllyy good lenses.

Hope this helps and sorry if im wrong in a few things. Still learning myself.

Oh if you have money to burn and your going to go for a Canon DSLR, go straight for the 1D MkIII, 1D MkII or the 5d MkII. Their full frame and their the top DSLR's to come out for Canon

500D, 40D, D90....

They'll all let you take great photos. The significance of bodies is way overstated IMO. Better buying a cheap body and spending on a decent lens or two.

If you want a 'big' camera, get a 40D and battery grip. Then go and club some seals. :D

I have a 40d is my first camera, things i like about it are that it has a better build quality than the X00d series. rubber grip some dust sealing. 6.5 frames per second burst rate, 3.5sh fps of the 500d.
As has been said it is abit bigger and heaver. I recommend it, as do heaps of others
But if you go dSLR it is really hard to go wrong, nikon and canon both very good manufactures, and will far exceed your expectations. ( i reckon)
there are cameras for all price ranges from $1000 to $6000 sh so decide how much you are willing to spend and then go to a camera store and have a play with the cameras in your range.
Also if you are looking at the kits lenses, they will last you a while but after not to long you will find your self wanting to invest in some better glass...
Cheers
Tom

all of my thoughts are there

Carl Zeiss - I used to own the 50mm f/1.4 the 35mm f/2 AND THE AMAZING 85mm f/1.4 <---- guess what? i sold them all.... i still regret selling the 85... but yeah... you will love them to bits for their build quality.... and ofcourse optics... me and EGD have owned a decent ammount of lenses and always seem to go back to NIKON auto focus lenses.....

so unless you have a crap load of money to spend on lenses buy nikon. ( i'm highly biased)

i have spent many thousands with 'Bartman'

where do u stay? in auckland? i might be able to let u use or see what different lenses do if you are keen...

bartman comes HIGHLY recommended!

i can get some cheaper from him if u let me know what u want.... i have gotten some gear for more than 2k+ from him for some other members on here so PM me if u keen to know about what prices etc

in my opinion you should get the D90 as its an excellent camera to start with and also to the more advanced features.

in saying that i will STRONGLY recommend you to spend LESS on the body and MUCH MUCH more on your lenses. they control how sharp your images come out. Kit lenses are just wrong i will never make the mistake of buying one again.

there is a new 18-200 coming out in the end of this year.

in saying that, that is probably the only lens i would recommend that is a kit lens.

once you have this lens you can decide what other (fast) lenses you want. i think that the 50mm 1.8 is a must for any starting photographer as it's so so cheap and gives really good results...

Looking at the type of photography you to shoot, id look at a second hand Canon 5D, and start with a 50mm f1.8, that way you have a good landscape lens and a great portrait lens.
The 5d is full frame is a stunning camera. And can be picked up for a about $2k and feels more stolid than a lot of cameras out there, Barring the Canon 1 series and Nikon D3

Can I just say that I got a mint condition EOS 1Ds with two batteries and only 17k shutter actuations for 1800 bucks - I used buy now for that as well. Reckon I could have got it cheaper if I was more patient and more skint :)

An. Absolute. Bargain.

Full frame, weather sealed, built like a tank, magnificent image quality up to 400 ISO. It beats the IQ of my 40D into a cocked hat at low ISO. There are some amazing used bargain bodies out there if you're willing to buy old tech. 20D and 30D can be had for peanuts and will still give you superb image quality and usability.
