Hey just one Q?
want to know if you use a flash when shooting during the day or harsh light.( eg the first shot looks like there's a flash)? Also what are good shutter/exp to use? I am keen as to get some pics of the guys in the crew but not to sure how to go about it. i have a 40d and a canon fisheye atm, just wondering what else i need get some nice shots. Or is it just get out there and give it a go.
Any info would be great

IMO that entirely depends on what you're trying to capture.. you don't need much more than a camera, as far as equipment goes.
A fast lens (<f2.8) is great for isolating the subject, and you'd want to keep your shutter speeds to quicker than 1/250 or so.. You can use a flash if you want to use a particular lighting technique, but it's not really needed at all unless the ambient lighting demands it to maintain a quick shutter speed.
I really like that grind shot btw, could have been a little more centered, but it's still a really cool perspective :)

shooting skating is a bit of a delicate balancing act, although I have a formula.
Mostly shoot with flash, as that is what is in demand.
You need to find a combination of shutter (usually 1/250 or 1/320 depending on how much ambient is available. The aperture is almost always f5.6) and flash duration. The shorter the better.
I'll post up some more if you like!
(A centred composition with Fisheye is not really the best, although I concede that in that first fisheye pic there is an annoying tilt to the right.)

get yourself a couple of cheap flashes and some pocket wizards and you'll be away laughing bro. I take it the Fisheye isn't full frame on your 40D? I'd avoid using it at all if it isn't.
would love to see some of your pics!

Hey just a random question.
Why are most skateboarding photos shot with either really wide lenses or fisheye?
Does it capture the whole setting or does it add to the height and elevation of the trick?
Just curious :)

the environment is as important as the trick/skater.
kinda allowing the viewer to imagine what it is like being there.
a tight crop gives nothing away, and creates no real intrigue I reckon.

ps. a fish eye is really the only wide you should use.
using a wide to try achieve the same thing is ugly. It's either Fish up close or stand back with your long lens.

Cheers that heaps to get me started. As this is my first camera i didnt know anything about crop factors etc when i purchased it, and that the fisheye isnt to good for skating on a 1.6 crop body. Lesson learned I guess, but skating isnt the only area i want to go into, so im sure ill find many uses for the fisheye.
So what lens would you suggest me getting for skating? 50mm? Or is there a certain focal length used most?
I am currently saving for a computer, so processing the pics iv taken is an issue, think there are a couple up on my flickr tho.
So you took all these, I buy all the mags when they come out and have all ways wondered how ya get the shots, props man cheers for all the info, been skating coming on 10 years soon its all ways mean to hangout with the guys, now just got more to think about when out and about with the camera in hand....

yo tom take loads of photos dude till you get of sick of it, best way to learn, if you cant afford an off camera flash, use your on board flash, keep your fish eye just in case you upgrade to a full frame camera.

(Y) Agreed! I feel into the same trap with my 15mm Fisheye. The difference but a cropped sensor and FF is insane
