I would like to recommend a couple of books I bought a while ago from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com).

Scott Kelby (http://www.scottkelby.com/) is the author of these books. He's a pretty well known Photoshop and photography expert.

Alright, enough about the guy.

The books I purchased were:

The Digital Photography Book (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-Scott-Kelby/dp/032147404X)
http://assets.fishpond.co.nz/9780321474049-crop-120x120.jpg

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-2/dp/0321524764/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243659282&sr=1-2)
http://assets.fishpond.co.nz/9780321524768-crop-120x120.jpg

To summarise, the books are perfect for beginners. Scott does not go into the technical hoohaa that frightens and confuses a lot of beginners. His "do x to end up with y" approach allows you to learn techniques very quickly. Each section takes around 10 minutes to read and he gets straight to the point. A quick and dirty guide indeed!

He does try to be "funny" throughout the book but personally I found that the humour started to get dry very quickly. But hey you're not really reading the book because you want a laugh right?

Anyway I've noticed The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-3/dp/0321617657/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243660063&sr=1-4) is on pre-order now and I'm looking forward to it!

And if you guys don't want to buy from Amazon then you can always check out NZ online bookshops such as Fishpond (http://www.fishpond.co.nz) or The Nile (http://www.thenile.co.nz). I haven't seen the books for sale at offline retailers such as Whitcoulls.

Agreed, these are both good read's.

Keep in mind that volume 2 is not volume 1 re-written it is all brand new material, so if you decide on this book go for vol.1 first, then if you enjoy it get vol.2

Both are very good books, espicailly if you are very new to photography.
If you some understanding of exposure, composition and post processing then they maybe a bit simple.

If you want to get them online try fishpond.co.nz or mightyape.co.nz first though :)
