I was hoping members who shoot in a street photography style or aesthetic might be more apparent which is why I opened this thread or is there a way to filter the thread you linked to so I can find out who shoots in street photography style or aesthetic?

Even if you have a body of street photography or photo journalism work I'd be interested in seeing it. My portfolio is not entirely dedicated and to be honest it's very generic in content. I'm working on my 2009 portfolio and I'll post a link to it when it's finished. My online portfolio/website I hope to have finished by the end of this year. London via Shangai sounds like a good photo opportunity. Good luck with that trip and I look forward to seeing the photographs you return with.

what do you regard as street photography?
Yeah that's the "age old" question. Any of the links I have at the top fairly much indicate my own philosophy of what street photography is. I believe as many others do, that there is a new evolution in street photography, it's happening now slowly and quitely beneath the layers of normality and preconceptions. Street photography has evolved from the confines of the street, it's no longer solely the domain of "urban reality" and now it encompasses life in a much wider sense but the style, mannerism and aesthetic of street photography as a form of documenting reality, still shines through.
I'm in no way opposed to the masters and hold more than a few of them in high regard as sources of inspiration. They will forever be the forbears of who gave birth to habitual tendency to document life. But as life and humanity evolves so must the method and thought-processes used to document it, in its most usual and unusual of moments. One of the Flickr street photography groups I'm a member of has a great line on their front page it reads "Respect the past but avoid being beholden to it." Photo journalism is akin to street photography or vice versa which ever way you want to word it. Though now one is more clearly defined from the other with factual information that helps to epitomise the photograph or photographs it accompanies.

you've clearly given it a lot more thought than most, in which case I'd say i don't shoot street photography, per se.
The majority of my work is of a commercial nature.
I'll certainly be checking back in with yours though!

Perhaps I have given it some thought perhaps not, I'm not really sure? I know I'm as close to constantly, evaluating my own style, technique and thought processes in doing what I do. I've always been attracted to human character and photography is the implement that allows me to freeze and explore that attraction. I think at some stage of personal and photographic development, regardless of style and ouput, we need to evaluate what we do, how we do it and most importantly whether we like doing it. I think if we don't, we would pretty much be autonomous people and that doesn't appeal at all to me.
I'm interested in all styles of photography..., okay maybe macro's of flowers, cute pussy cats and dogs wrapped in rolls of toilet paper don't do anything to inspire me phoographically. Apart from that I'm interested in all styles/genres/types of photography. Now if I may ask you.... what do you call photography of a commercial nature?

i think of commercial as being paid work for clients, that has no particular philosophy attached to it.

i think of commercial as being paid work for clients, Agree with this bit.
that has no particular philosophy attached to it.Disagree with this bit.
Presumably the client has come to you BECAUSE of your style of work, your philosophy on how to compose, expose and present.
That's not saying be a prima-donna and refuse to shoot certain subjects, but at the end of the day it's your input into the creative process that will get you noticed and get you the job.

What commercial photography means to me is producing work on a client demand basis. Any work where you are employed to produce photographic material for a client, that includes, commissioned work, agency work or advertorial work, i.e. commercial work is usually defined by a concept, a brief and a deadline. While other work such as photo-essays (photo journalism) and exhibitions are inherently different in that they might not be defined by a brief or a deadline they can still produce revenue, which can be considered as commercial work also. Commercial Photography by default, is directed more at the professional end of the consumer market.

Here's my street stuff:

It's not traditional candid street photography, nor traditional documentary photography, but it is on the street, and it is a document.
Also, I am about 1 month behind in posting images.

The main reason the people look so warm and welcoming is they are drunk. Also, it might have something to do with me emailing them their photos and them coming back numerous times over the years for more photos. I've been doing it for nearly 3 years and have over 20,000 photos.

Yeah, you've got nice people shots Iain. As another kiwi looking at your photographs, they have a quintessential kiwi-ness about them to that I think people from overseas might miss. I guess that's why I can find some affinity to the people in them and the character they bring-forward for your camera.
Keep up the good work!
