Hey everyone - the other day I was smart enough to knock my canon dslr onto the floor and I managed to put a nice big crack along the face of my LCD screen. A small tear started to well up in the corner of my eye and I started to Imagen the worst, luckily the LCD didn't smash so it works fine but the crack on the protective cover is quite bad and needs replacing.
Has anyone had any experience with this type of tragedy? I have seen replacement kits on the net but not sure I want to be poking around and doing it myself?
Any suggestions would help a lot, thanks

i have only ever watched the guides on youtube, never done it.dont look to hard.
watch some of them see if you feel up to it, otherwise send it off to canon, i dont know how much it will cost, but it will be a tad bit i would say

Yes, Feb last year I had the same issue. Is the LCD affected or just the glass? The repair on my 5DMkII was done by Canon and if I'd realized what was involved I would have been tempted to try it myself if my camera had been out of warranty. Cost was about $80 (including $4.00 for double sided tape for goodness sake!) from memory but I don't have the accounts here to check.
Sadly their "fix" involving a software upgrade, created a whole string of other problems with the camera which resulted in having to go back to film for 4 months and eventually (the fourth time back to them) a new body. Hoping that you don't have THAT happen!
Cheers, Jenny

I have cracked the top LCD screen(protective glass) on my 1dmk2n , it was just a little tap when another lens grazed it. Does it bother me, not in the slightest, i just put a piece of screen protector over it, to weather proof it again.

How long do you think a 500d body should last??? is it really going to make much difference really fixing it?
Understand why you think that but, by the time you have blinked canon will have two new body's out 550-600d and your 500 will be old news....

but i would rather have to upgrade my camera when ive out growen it, not because i didnt fix a crack, got water in it and it broke ?
the 600D isnt far away from coming out, but thats no reason to get rid of a camera just to buy the new one if the one you have does everything you need.

Im just saying that people get to protective of there gear at times, plus you would have to drop it completely in water for it not to work any more so i don't think a cracked screen is going to make much difference.

That's why I shoot a 30D, and I will shoot a 30D until Canon runs out of replacement shutters. Good old 2006 technology.
Deflag, I'd just put a piece of cellphone screen protector over it, and live with the crack - it'll keep dust and the odd rain out. If you need more weatherproofing than that you shouldn't be taking your 500D out in the first place ;)
If I had a crack that really bugged me I'd take my camera to the Canon service center and see what they can do.

A fireman cryin now ive heard it all :)
I think he's planning on fixing it himself, I know his camera works fine we shot some night pics of the city a couple night ago. He's probably too emotional about the crack to reply to this thread again tho......

Thanks for the tips guys ( except stormnz..."go hide back in your little hole", :)
Think I might just live with it for now - Id rather spend my money on a new tripod rather than a new screen.
