Wintersun Festival

Hey first topic here, been waiting until I edit these pics to sign up. Been thinking NZ needs a photo community like this. Some ofg you will know me from NZHondas. Those people please forgive me for the rest of this post being the same as over there, don't really want to type two versions. ;)

Ok I was getting some sun in the Goldcoast last month (haven't seen it since). Out of sheer luck, I arrived during the Wintersun Festival and was able to get to Coolangatta in time for the last day of it. There were an amzing amount of cars there, every time I thought I must be at the end, I spotted a few hundred more cars.

The event was completly packed and the cars were very close together, this and some really harsh sun/shadows made it incredibly hard to get good pictures, the cars themselves though compensated for this by making technically poorer shots still awesome.

I also went back the next day and some of the cars were still about, but just parked up letting me get some less noisy pics.

I used an external flash/fdiffuser for most to bring out the paint and soften some shadows. Got some funny looks using a large flash in sunlight. No tripod (way too crowded) so they are all single exposures, so yeah there will be a blown sky or two as I was exposing for the cars paint.

Oh Wintersun Festival!! Used to live over there and that bright sun can be the biggest pain ever for car shots!!

Thanks, when I first got my DSR I went to a car show and the results weren't worth showing lol. Pleased with how much I have imporved since then. :)

Haha yeah makes me wonder what it would have been like if it was summer... Seriously Winter there is as warm as I can handle.

Thanks, I exposed for the chrome which meant the rest of the shot was underexposed. I had the look in mind when I took the shot, but had to do a bit of post to achive it with a couple of semi-transparant layers and a black paintbrush. That said, I only really had to do the edges.
