grrr caps
how much do you want to spend?
if your after one lens id recommend this for about $500
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Camera-accessories/Lenses/Canon/auction-229503183.htm
if you have lots of money, the following for about $5000 will do what you want
canon 17-40L
canon 50mm 1.4
canon 100mm 2.8 macro
canon 70-200L

Hey and welcome!
Your particular photography interests cover pretty much the whole spectrum of lenses -- you'd need everything from macro, wide angle & zoom lenses.
Im not going to make any suggestions as I still only have my kit lens and 50mm f/1.8 but keriboi has some good suggestions. The 70-200mm L IS is on my wishlist though :o
Good luck and let us know how you get on! You will love upgrading to DSLR!!!

Hi, have now bought canon 40D and with it came a Canon EF 35-105mm F4-5.6 lens. What other lenses could people advise. Thanks.

For sports get something quicker like the 70-200 L IS lens as suggested.
Anything 2.8 or less with yeild good results but not knowing alot about cannon I can't personally give you any models that might be better than the other.

On my 40D I am using the 70-200mm 2.8l Image Stabilised Canon Lens. A nice piece of kit but expensive
My next wish list lens is the 12-22mm Sigma lens.

I am not sure if this will help, but I am a Canon user and really enjoy using my 24 - 135mm f/4 IS L lens.
I also have a 70 - 200mm F/2.8 IS L and it is a fantastic lens. It is a top quality lens and I was a bit surprised at how heavy it is. You will notice wearing it around your neck for a while! Monopod recommended...

Just purchased a 70-200 L f4, cost me 1150 new. wanted the is version but couldnt afford the extra 800. but any L series lens you cant really go wrong. If you have money to burn then the skys the limit but if your on a budget then just go for a 50mm. all the 3 50mm that canon make are very sharp lenses. $200 for the 50 1.8 $800 for the 50 1.4 and about $2500 for the 50 L1.2
it you want a wida angle then they are all prity pricy. over 1000...

in my last post i said a sigma 12 - 22mm was on my wishlist. but back then I didnt realise this range is more for full frame lenses. For the APS-C sized sensor the 10-20mm Sigma is far better. And I just purchased it!! The last lens on my list is now a Macro lens. Then after that its pure luxuries (like a 300mm) and that should do it.

I picked mine up for 2.7K, it is a little ugly but the glass and auto focus is superb .
