Filter? Not really. I would suggest a star-filter if you want a bit of cheesyness, but IMO you get a better effect for static shots this way:

If it's a static / light-trail shot, low ISO + small aperture (f11 - f16 usually about right) will get stars produced off any static light-sources with the number of points to the star being the number of blades that are in your aperture if an even number, else twice the number if an odd number of aperture blades.

Other than that, tripod + remote release. Also setting your camera to 2nd curtain sync is good if you're using a flash with people, or if you're wanting to "freeze" a subject at the end of a movement.

As people tend to move immediately after the flash, 2nd curtain sync means that the flash goes at the END of the photo, so you get the pose held for the duration of the photo.

You'll need to look in your camera manual for how to enable this.

I'd suggest a polarising filter.. really good job at getting reflections off glass (not so good at getting it off metals/chrome) and making the sky look deep and sexy.
Not so great for low light, as it makes it even darker :]
If you're taking something in low light that's moving, then definitely a quicker lens.
If it's static, then a good heavy tripod, and a remote shutter as mentioned above.

Actually a graduated ND4 filter is a good option if you're wanting to capture more landscape detail against a lighter sky, or use a sunset (aka orange / red graduated) filter to throw the sky into stronger colour-contrast vs foreground.

ok, well have just bought a Marumi Graduated ND4 filter, just wait for it to get here in the mail, then have a play, cheers for the ideas guys :)

If you can afford it, Cokin (or Cokin-clone) kit - or something similar - is a VERY good way for dealing with graduated filters: You can position the point of the graduation by sliding the filter up/down in the holder rather than having the graduation always transition in the centre of the shot.

I've got a few P-series filters, really happy with them & no need to stuff around with screwing filters on. It means you can use all of your filters on all of your lenses, assuming you have the right adapter ring.

Actually just really good for filters, not just graduated ones ;)

Thanks to everyone who came. Im not going to be able to process my photos until next week as im not home all week but im sure the others will show their magic.

Smurff even managed to fill his 8GB memory card up with multiple exposures. Good luck merging them :D. Can probably post them in the landscape subforum.

Cheers!
Until the next one...

190 bucksDamn. Seriously, think about talking to some of the camera repair places around - should be more like $80 for a proper sensor clean (including camera disassembly etc)
