General outdoor photos

hi guys, so its been nice and foggy this morning and i was comming up through howick, diceded to try some pics of the war memorial and area.

so my pics didnt turn out great, any tips for pictures in fog?

The fog was pretty heavy alright.
We are half up the hill in Highland Park, and normally have a view over loyd elsmere to the city. This morning I couldn't even see the neighbours house.

play away :D i still havnt got round to trying tht gimp program, so there just conveted to jpeg.

i like number 2, so if u can make tht look flash ild be happy :D

it was real heavy when i went out, thought bout takin pics then, but decided to wait for it to lightin up, didnt want just photos of fog hahaha

drove past loyd elsmere, couldnt even see into if from the road hahaha.

Here you go :)


I rotated it, then cloned in some extra grass to fill the blank spaces, and also removed the house behind the tree.

Then ran an action over it that messed with the saturation and contrast as well as giving it a difuse glow.
To finnish it I adjust levels to make the fog white, bring up the blacks a little, then add some saturation to the greens, and darkened and further saturated the yellow.

I had a play with this one as well.
If you shot RAW, there would be a lot of potential to get even more out of it.

I simply adjusted the levels then saturation/brightness on the red channel.
Then run Talons sharpening process over it on a layer set at about 70% opacity.

yea, ive shot in RAW, found i cant get GIMP to work with them, may have to download a plugin i guess

Your camera should have come with RAW conversion software.

If its a Canon, then DPP is fantastic, one of the best converters out there.
I believe the Nikon one is also pretty good, but have never used it.

yes it comes with conversion software,
but then theres no point taking fotos in RAW if i carnt edit them in RAW on gimp, so may take the photos in JPEG.

But the converter should have options to edit them :)

Technically you can't edit a raw file.
What a raw converter does is display the info in the file in a way that is recognisable as a photo, and then lets you manipulate that data in a variety of ways before you out put the file to a type that can be edited in a program like gimp, or photoshop - e.g. JPEG or TIFF etc.


I now do most of my post work in Lightroom, working directly on the RAW files.
I then out put these to Tiff, and use photoshop to run a variety of batch process on the TIFF files for out put to web, or print etc.

There should be a few programs out there free for Windows that you can use to alter your RAW images - im not sure as im on a different OS at the moment.

I find it better to shoot in RAW because I can change the white balance of the photo without effecting quality, you can't do this with JPEG. I found this site that has a good detailed explaination between the pros and cons of shooting in RAW or JPEG for you: Understanding Raw Files (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/u-raw-files.shtml)

Its easier to change white balance, colours and everything else before opening the file in photoshop or gimp, then you can do cropping/image size and any manupulation you want in jpeg form.

Actually you might want to try out UFRaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFRaw) as you might be able to use it as a plugin for Gimp - Im using it at the moment and finding it quite good.

oh, and it didnt cost me anything for the underground parking at the muesum, wasnt there long enough maby.

i am actuually happy with most of my pics, i know my composition isnt great, but i still like them

i didnt clean the filter... so there is a really nice dot in the sky... i blame it on aliens lol

also, could a mod change the topic title from, pictures in fog to, general outdoor photos.

great shots something about that chain i like , don't be afraid to crop dead space on your images

on the first image could of maybe taken the bottom of weather board off my eye kind of gets distracted abit there but it finds it's way back to they chain ( witch i like by the way)

And the birds i like as well , what is it called ? pic 3 ,4

with the chain i was a little disappointed that not any part of it is in focus quite right,

the bird in 3 and 4 i think are wood pidgins, there were two of them, maby partners, will put up pics of the other one tomorrow aswell :) they were pretty big birds.

ill have ago with cropping dead space, cheers for the advice :D

smurff - i like number 23 in your first post and number 4 in your sencond post - bird looks like it is in a portrait pose haha.
the chain picture is good, but it looks like you used the wrong white balance - even if you were going for a arty feel, it comes across to me as oops i forgot to change the whitebalance (its the brown/orange hue that you get when you use outdoor WB indoors with normal lights)

Nice pictures, and its good that you're getting out and actually shooting

An interesting picture i took at a batch in Oakura.
This was taken just about 10pm on a very storming night.
It is totally pitch black - no moonlight if i recall right.
With 15s time exposure with an Fujifilm f30 it is still pitch black... except once in a while you would get a lightning strike! Daylight for a millisecond...
Shame i only had my little point and shoot.
