View Full Version : Thoughts about being a paid retoucher?

Hi guys,
I have a little dilemma on my hands and i was hoping to get some advice/opinions from other professionals on this. I've recently been offered a permanent part time position working as a retoucher for this smallish photographic business and i have accepted with the boss but have not yet started. I have graduated recently in photography and although i have done some paid work before (as a photographer) and consider myself to be at an intermediate level as a retoucher, I have not held any positions in a commercial environment working with other professionals. I see this as a really fantastic learning opportunity and i like the people i have met so far, but my dilemma is that the pay is really low and its going to see me struggle abit financially. I have been asked to work on a contractor's basis even though the nature of the job is much more akin to an employer-employee situation. I will have to do all my own taxes, ACC, holiday pay etc which i have no issues in doing but once that is taken into account i am left working for quite abit less than the equivalent of minimum wage under an employee agreement. I am unsure whether this may be seen as being fair in this kind of industry bearing in mind my lack of "proven" retouching experience (after all, there are many people willing to do unpaid internships while starting out), or whether this might seem a little dodgy? What do you guys think??? Any thoughts would be much appreciated :)

P.S: I'm new to this forum and i must say it is so nice to finally see a New Zealand based photographic forum!

hi and welcome.

do you want the job? do you think you'll enjoy it?

it may be the stepping stone to get into the digital media/photography industry that you need?

sometimes you just have to take the opportunities as they come yes?

Hi Jack,
Yeah i do want the job and will definately take it for the kind of experience it will provide because i know that is the most invaluable part of this position... I guess that i am just frustrated because it seems to be abit cheeky to be paid below minimum standards on a contracting position... I guess i will just have to suck it up. Thanks for the feedback.

I'd advise you to chuck it in immediately; yes, it IS slim pickings at the moment, and yes experience is important, but this is just a way for them to undermine the labor laws!

It seems to me, that a lot of the time 'on the job experience' is often just a euphemism for screwing you blind.

I just quit a similar role (hired to be the graphic designer (contractor) for a publishing company on the North Shore, designing and lay-out of both advertising and the actual magazines as well), the guy initially agreed to $30 an hour, then, once i started, wanted to pay $20.
I agreed, provided it moved up to $25 after the first mag, and up to $30 after 6 months. (keep in mind, he was charging out the ad design at $100/h)
He agreed, then started paying late (within the first couple of weeks), then started paying short...

Took that for all of 1 week, then told him to shove it!

Often, all the experience you get from roles like this is how to be treated like a worthless piece of shit.

Also, if like me, you are employed as a contractor, then remember: You are a sole trader, and as such, are not entitled to claim back expenses like fuel, cell phone, vehicle costs...

This "experience" better be bloody good, cause it's costing you a lot!
