Tell us what you have most recently purchased. Photography related of course :)

I just bought a Lexar Professional UDMA, Compact Flash Card, 8GB, 300X from Ascent (http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=382775). Priced very reasonably and free delivery too.

What have you just bought?

I have used 3 monopods till i found the one i use now.
I found that cheap is not good.
the first monopod i got had a head, i took it off after 2 uses as i found useless.
I have covered a lot of sport and the only people who i see using a head on a monopod are people that dont know who to use there gear. eg having the monopod screwed on to the camera when they are using a lens with a tripod mount on it.

-smurff

My current monopod is a manfrotto 334B
The reasons it is the best so far for me ( it is always on my 3002.8) firstly manfrotto is quaility, i have no second thought about having my camera and lens stuck on the end of it.

Also it can take 8kg so im not pushing the monopod to near is weight limit.

The 334b is automatic so i can go from standing to kneeling in a second without having to unlock extend then lock leg, i just pull on the grip.
That way i have less time without my eye in the viewfinder and finger on the shutter.

The only negative so far , is the minimum height and 67cm is just to tall for me when im sitting ( slouching) on my butt and shooting kids. I now have a beach chair that sits about 3 cm from the ground , which is great for muddy frosty Saturday morning Rugby/Soccer.

Thanks Kazeden. :) Yes, I'm moving down there next month with my wife. Really looking forward to it.

It'll be worth the wait once you've saved for your D700. Simply phenomenal camera! I was thinking of waiting for the replacement too but I'd be in NZ by then and it'd probably be out of my price range. Now I just need to save for a 12-24. ...and an 85 1.4...

jackinavox

in terms of pricing, i think they are somewhat the same.. you just have to be good at bargaining.

so.. in saying that i managed to bag a 85mm f1.8 for almost $200 off the window sticker price.

i could have gotten it cheaper from the likes of PI or e-info but i'm keen to build a good relationship with the local retailers.

Yea that flyer? It's the Aipa Gearfest. funnily enough I know the owner of the studio, and will be hanging with him this sat :) I'll prob be turning up in the morn as I've got to goto a wedding in the arvo. If i see you there no doubt I'll pop a hello to you. I shoot Nikon so not sure if I'll find anything as such...

I've got a Nikon 24-70 on my D90, and find it an excellent lens to have. If you don't mind the FL and will upgrade to FF then it would be a great 'go-to' lens... Unless you have prime-itis haha. My mate brought in his 85 f/1.2L if you didnt see. That thing is SEXY! :P

i had got the bag on teh weekend, i had my gear with me as i was gunna go do some random shooting after being there today.

im planning to hopefully make it to the gearfest, you dont happen to have the details do ya? otherwise ill have to go back to get a flyer. . . which im not really complaing about hahaha.

prime-itis, not me im a zoom person, my GF is a prime person. i saw that lens your mate had, damn that looked nice!

im going to hopefully rent the 24-70mm 2.8L from them over christmas, shall be good fun, then one day i hope to get a good second hand one. (dont have the budget for new most of the time) unless i can improve my photography and get some paying work hahaha.

how do you find the D90? i was planing to buy one of them instead of canon, but there were non i stock, if i see you at the gearfest and you have your gear ill have to have a play :P

i have so many other things to write but the post would be huge! i think the caffene drink im having is kicking in hahaha

It some situations you wont and some you will , I take my UV filters off my lens when im shooting im only useing them plus the lens cap for protection , i paid good money for my glass so i don't see the point of putting crap class over top of my good glass, im not saying Hoya or any other brand is crap i just don't see the point , as with everything i say its my opinion

the only other time i put filters on my glass are effect filters ie ND and what not

Cheers man thanks for the input. From what ive read (not on this forum) the Hoya filters are the best money can buy and should give zero change to image quality? And at $80-$120 by no means cheap. I definatly dont want to put "cheap crap" glass over the top of my $1000+ lens. My eldest daughter is a magpie to shiny stuff and ive been cleaning dirty fingerprints of the lens 2-3 times a week. Hence the need for some protecton. Why cant wives put covers back on stuff....

From experience, Hoyas aren't the best. But i still think they're decent. The reason I say this is, a while ago I purchased a new Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 from progear, and wanted to buy a filter with it. I was demonstrated a brand new B+W UV filter vs. a Hoya pro1 on a peice of white A4 paper (both were brand new taken from sealed packaging).

oh my what a difference! The hoya had a slight yellow cast to it! the B+W, was the same as the paper. I kid you not. from now on I buy B+W filters. also as a bonus, I find them much easier to clean as well.

just as a note though, a 77mm B+W UV filter @ progear cost me around $180. circular polarisers in somewhere around $300ish.

tomberkley
09-01-2011, 08:02 AM
i have a B+W ND grad its really good and doesn't affect the image whatsoever. I also used to use uv filters for protection, i dont anymore i just dot see the point. If its finger prints on the glass that your worried about you will still have to be cleaning the filter glass. Go for a filter with a floride coating they are easer to clean by far.
But B+W the real deal when it comes to filters, just pricy.

I have been very conscious of my photography purchases for the last year.
Well i finally made one :)
It is Cinefoil, which is basically thick black tinfoil.
If you have speedlights/ strobes this thing is a must have.
It is so versatile, you can make a snoot, gobo, barn doors or anything to better control your light in seconds, and when finished you can screw it up into a ball and throw it in your camera bag, ready for next time.

I have just splashed out on a Canon 90f2.8 TSE , i have been wanting one for years, and now the USD is so weak i couldn't say no any longer, Cost $1k so far, lets hope customs don't pick it up :) if they do it will only be another $150.
I also picked up some grids and gels for my strobes again from the states.
Thats it for the year.
I might be selling a Canon 300f2.8 , as it isn't getting much use of late.

Got a Crumpler 7MDH today. The Brazillion is too big as an everyday bag and the 5MDH is too small, so this slots in perfectly.

Next on the list: a drybox.

the 7MDH is a nice bag, was the first one i got wen i went to canon, as the sony bag i had with my sony didnt look so good with the canon hahaha

let us know how the dry box goes when you get it, have been quietly interested in them, but dont have the space or money lol
