i was just wondering when is it not to use the flash defuser? these are the ones that attached to the flashes. or should i just buy a umbrellas instead?

It depends on the light you want, if you want harsh light use the flash defuser, if you want softer light use an umbrella.

It depends on how close you can place it to the subject, and size of subject. And the effect you want to create.

Basically the smaller light source the harder shadows.
If you have a 1m x 1m softbox 1m from subject it gives softer shadows than the same softbox at 2m .

A lot of people starting out with softboxes place them to far away, once you learn about light you place it just out of frame, eg head and shoulders shot the light source is 2-3 feet from subject.

In general, the larger the softbox the softer the light (Y)
