The real question is what do you intend shooting ?
I picked up a good tripod when i started out, used it for a week, then didnt touch it for 3-4 years, now the only time i use it is for studio type shots, where everything is staged.

I picked up a SLIK PRO 340DX and it seems to me like a great lightweight tri-pod. i think it was about $240 from photo international.

wow thats nice tripod.
for a beginner, i would just get something really good and strong that would hold the camera steady and wont fall over in a light wind.
i would just get something better then the budget one.

Tripod is a good investment. If you invest in a good one like Manfrotto it will last you for years. When I was buying mine the guy told me he's got a customer (photo journalist) who's just purchased a new Manfrotto after his old one served him well for 20+ years but the only reason why he's getting a new one is because he ran it over in his car.

i just turned my cheap budget tripod into a flash/light stand today. then i looked in trademe and i could get a light stand cheaper then a budget tripod!
