Hi everyone, Im getting a canon 40d for wildife, specifically bird photography. What telephoto lenses would you recommend (below $1500)?
Ive already got a 75-300mm III but not image stabilised. Ive looked up lenses such as the EF-S 55-250mm, 70-300mm, 70-200mm. Should I go canon or sigma/tamron?
Thanks for any help

Chris

The 55-250 is not a great lens, and the 70-200's, while awesome lenses, won't have the reach necessary for bird photography. In general, good long telephoto lenses are not cheap, you will probably struggle to get anything 'good' for your budget. If it was me I would look at the canon 100-400L, or maybe a 70-200 f2.8 plus a teleconverter.
The 70-300 IS canon lens you mentioned is a good lens, though it is at its softest wide open at the long end which is where you will be likely using it. It is also not the fastest lens out there at f5.6 at the long end. They are pretty good for the money though (if you look on trademe they go for around $600-$800)

+1 on the 70-200mm + extender.

There are a few 300f4 IS on trade me at the moment, for around the dollars you want to spend.
