Nice shots man do you do any band shoots for money? You seem to be pretty close at times!
I was at that rage against the machine, it was amazing. Best concert ever.

What lens are you using? And just wondering, do you ever use the flash? Always wondered this cos always thought wont it disturb the person on stage?

they dont look like flash is used except for !!! and Dick Johnson but they could have just been conveniently well lit.
nice photos except for that first one. the depth of field does not look natural at all. forgive me if it is, it just doesn't look right.

That first image had a little too much tweaking in post processing. Was trying out a bokeh filter. Needless to say, I didn't purchase the filter.
Generally speaking I apply very little PP to my images except for minor contrast, saturation or exposure adjustments.

Generally I shoot a gig for either a magazine or a promoter. In NZ, most gigs are shot "for the love". There's not too much money to be made. Generally enough to cover expenses and buy the wife a wee thanks-for-putting-up-with-my-endless-pursuit-of-the-rocknroll-dream-through-the-lens-of-my-camera gift.

I only use flash with small club/DJ work. Slow sync becomes my best friend on those occasions.
No flash to be used on the big gigs. You'll have your proverbials chopped off and never get a media pass again. The lighting is always good enough to get some cool stuff, combined with high ISO settings, fast lenses and the right shutter speed.
You've only got 3 songs to get the money shots.

Some really nice, high profile stuff there mate. The high ISO performance you're getting is fantastic.
Are you on Flickr or anything?
I've just moved from Wellington to Melbourne, and there's an absolutely huge live music base over here. While most of it is interstate acts, as opposed to international, ya can get some pretty nice experience at least.
One question though, how did you break into the space of contacting promoters of larger international stuff, rather than organizers of national gigs.. I find promoter contact details are bloody hard to find most of the time :/

some times you just have to know who to ask, other times you gotta be set up with a magazine/website. i often shoot for real grove/grove guide so usually they will get me the photo pass if i need one

Hiya Rick.
Thanks for the feedback on my stuff.
As Marms says it's all about building industry relationships. Reputation is everything (of course), and a proven portfolio and unrelenting (but gentle) persistence eventually got me through the doors I wanted.
Thankfully this is just a hobby, so I wasn't discouraged by the ga-zillion "no's" I got before the yes's started coming. I always send a promoter my live shots even if I've never met them (i.e. shot for a magazine). They soon learn who you are and remember you in the future. Doors open from there.
